How Much Protein Do You Actually Need Per Day?

Why protein needs go up when calories go down

In a deficit, your body is looking for energy anywhere it can find it — and without enough protein coming in, some of that energy comes from muscle tissue, not just fat.   • Breakfast is usually the weakest meal — cereal, toast, and coffee can carry a whole day's worth of carbs and almost no protein.
  • "Healthy" doesn't mean high-protein. A salad with a light dressing can be under 10g of protein unless it's built around a real protein source.
  • Snacking skews toward carbs and fat by default — chips and crackers are effortless; a protein-forward snack usually takes planning.
